The Council of the Municipality of Kismayo

The city has prioritized expanding access to clean and reliable water sources while improving sanitation infrastructure.

Key initiatives include:

  • Rehabilitation of the Alanley Water Station, a major source of piped water to the eastern part of Kismayo.
  • Borehole drilling in Faanoole and Gulwade districts, providing safe drinking water to previously underserved areas.
  • Installation of public sanitation blocks in Farjano market and near Dalxiska Park, enhancing hygiene for traders and commuters.
  • Ongoing partnerships with organizations such as UNICEF and Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) for WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programming.

Healthcare

The healthcare system in Kismayo is improving through infrastructure upgrades, expanded services, and workforce support.

Facilities and projects include:

  • Kismayo General Hospital: The largest referral hospital in Jubaland, currently undergoing expansion to improve surgical, maternal, and emergency services.
  • Iftin Mother and Child Health (MCH) Center: Located in Shaqaalaha area, specializing in maternal health, vaccinations, and nutrition.
  • MSF-supported clinics: Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) supports several primary health clinics, especially in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.
  • Deployment of community health workers to deliver basic services and awareness, particularly around cholera prevention and maternal care.

Education

Efforts are underway to boost enrollment, especially among girls, and improve educational quality.

Facilities and projects include:

  • Kismayo Primary School and Ahmed Gurey Secondary School: Among the oldest public schools, currently benefiting from rehabilitation programs supported by the Jubaland Ministry of Education.
  • Jubaland University (Kismayo Campus): Offers degree programs in education, agriculture, economics, and public health.
  • Al-Hidaya Integrated School: Provides both formal and Quranic education and serves many orphans and vulnerable children.
  • Construction of additional classrooms and latrines in Faanoole Primary School through support from Save the Children and ADRA Somalia.
  • Ongoing campaigns to improve girls’ enrollment and reduce dropout rates, especially in Gulwade and Via Afmadow neighborhoods.
