The Jubaland Green and Clean Project is a bold five-year initiative aimed at transforming Kismayo, the commercial capital of Jubaland State of Somalia into a greener, cleaner, and healthier city. With a population exceeding 500,000, Kismayo is facing growing environmental and public health challenges, including deforestation, unmanaged urban waste, air pollution, and rising temperatures. This initiative proposes the planting of 1,000,000 trees, implementation of coordinated cleaning campaigns across the city, and the employment of 10,000 youth and women to lead and sustain these efforts, with long-term outcomes expected in climate resilience, employment creation, improved sanitation, and stronger civic engagement. The scheme not only contributes to national development strategies but also aligns with global climate and sustainability goals.
The subject project is the outcome of successful completion of community pilot project which commenced on 24/04/2024 in the Fanoole Neighborhood of the city of Kismayo, marking the first phase of the Jubaland Green and Clean Project. This neighborhood was selected due to its high population density, significant environmental degradation, and strategic visibility within the city. Since its inception, 5643 trees have been successfully planted, symbolizing a strong start and demonstrated community commitment to urban greening and environmental restoration. The implementation has been made possible through the generous support of the local business community, which has provided essential materials, logistics, and financial contributions.
Kismayo City Municipality is dedicated to planning and implementing development initiatives that promote economic growth, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and citizen participation.
